Optimism is not a particularly fashionable position in modern music. Dark, brooding, and emotionally complicated tend to do better on streaming algorithms and in critical circles. FREDRYD, a Stockholm-based DJ, producer, musician, and dancer, has never seemed particularly interested in that observation. Since his 2023 debut EP A Change Through The Tropical Vibes, he has been building a project around empathy, acceptance, and shared humanity, and he has done it without any apparent self-consciousness about whether that is a commercially savvy move.
His influences tell you a lot about where he is coming from. Avicii, Zara Larsson, Ed Sheeran, Phil Collins. Artists who understood that electronic and pop music can carry real emotional weight without becoming heavy. That is the lane FREDRYD operates in, blending EDM, indie electronic, progressive house, and pop into something that feels genuinely uplifting rather than performatively positive.
Natural Things is his fourth release through LFTD GLOBAL/LVLD MUSIC, and it follows a run of singles that have kept up the momentum from his first full-length Love Is What We Need and the more experimentally minded second album The Way To The Good Life. This one arrives right on time for summer, and it sounds exactly like that.
The Song
The concept came at the start of the year when FREDRYD started imagining what a soundtrack for the months ahead might sound like. The idea was simple: leave the distractions behind, reconnect with the people who matter, and be present for the moments that actually mean something. Pascal Letoublon’s Friendships was a specific reference point, which makes sense given that track’s warm focus on human connection.
Natural Things opens with birdsong before chord stabs and bright synths bubble up alongside pitched vocal elements and rolling drums. When the drop arrives it lands in a groove-focused dance scene, pulsing basslines and smooth vocal leads moving above a crisp beat while airy melodic lines and intricate synth pips float through the arrangement. It is energising without being frantic, uplifting without being saccharine.
The production is clean and confident. FREDRYD knows exactly what he wants the song to do and does not overload it trying to prove anything. The melodic moments catch you and the groove underneath them holds you there. As summer anthems go it earns the title without reaching for it.
The Bigger Picture
What makes FREDRYD interesting beyond this single is the consistency of his worldview across everything he has released. The optimism is not a marketing angle. It is the actual point. He has talked about starting this project as a feminist and an optimistic idealist who wanted to contribute something positive, and that ethos shows up in every release without feeling forced.
Dance music that aims to inspire as much as it lands with sonic impact is a harder target to hit than it sounds. Natural Things hits it.
