Consequential – I’m Alive EP

Not many electronic producers have a backstory that starts in hardcore punk. Consequential does. The UK-based producer spent years in live band environments before the pull of electronic music eventually took over, and even then the journey was not linear. There was a period where he stepped away from music entirely, a reset that turned out to be more productive than it probably felt at the time. When he came back in late 2022 with the debut single (4), it was clear something had shifted. The aggression of those early years had not disappeared. It had just been rewired.

That is actually what makes his music interesting. The energy that drove a hardcore punk performance, the forward momentum, the physical impact of it, did not vanish when he switched to drum pads and synths. It just found new shapes. Slick rhythmic structures sit alongside delicate melodic lines throughout his catalog, and the tension between those two impulses is where the most compelling moments tend to happen.

I’m Alive is his debut EP and the result of over a year of careful reconstruction. Each of the four tracks went through multiple stages of building, dismantling, and rebuilding until it reached its final form. That process is audible. Nothing here feels rushed or accidental.

The Tracks

Body Language opens with fluttering vocal sample chops and swirling instrumental elements before a spacious atmosphere stretches out and percussion sets up a rolling beat. From there it injects rattling drum and bass energy that is genuinely invigorating, peppered with bright melodic flourishes and lively vocal flashes throughout. It is a strong opening statement that covers a lot of sonic ground in a short time without feeling scattered.

Enjoy the Moment arrives with bursts of hazy vocalisations and soft instrumental pips before charging drums and stacked synth tones take over. A dreamy piano-led passage sits in the middle before the track swells into an exhilarating uptempo drum and bass finish. The contrast between the soft entry and the hard landing is one of the better dynamic moves on the EP.

The title track I’m Alive drifts in with smoky choral textures, soft piano notes, and transportive synths that ease you into something genuinely mesmeric before crisp beats bring a driving forward motion into focus. The combination of high-octane rhythms and soulful vocal leads is exactly the balance the best drum and bass chases and rarely catches quite this cleanly.

Touch Down closes things with steady claps, airy instrumental stabs, sweeping texture, and gliding bass before shuffling percussion builds the energy into a flurry of thrilling beats, alluring vocals, and siren-like synth lines. It is a gripping finale that sends you out with more energy than you came in with, which is the correct way to end a record like this.

The Verdict

I’m Alive is the most complete picture of what Consequential is building so far. The punk background informs the energy without ever making the music feel aggressive in the wrong way, and the care that went into each track over the course of a year of reconstruction shows in how finished and intentional everything sounds. This is a debut EP that sounds like an artist who knows exactly what he is doing.
